چکیده

Recently, we conducted a Very Large Telescope (VLT) large program to search for forming clusters by looking for overdensities of Lyα emitters around high redshift radio galaxies. In total seven proto-clusters were discovered, including a protocluster around the radio galaxy MRC 0316–257 at z ∼ 3.13. This structure has an excess of Lyα emitters by a factor of 3 as compared to the field, and the derived mass is 2–5 ×10 M⊙. The Lyα emitters in the proto-cluster are on average bluer than Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). Also, the galaxies are faint (sub L∗) and small (half light radii < 1.7 kpc, which is smaller than the average size of LBGs). This might indicate that, at least a fraction of, Lyα emitters could be young (∼ 10 yr), nearly dust-free, forming galaxies. 1 VLT Large Program: overdense regions in the early

THE OVERDENSE ENVIRONMENT OF A LARGE Lyα NEBULA AT z≈2.7

Large nebulae (&50 kpc) emitting strongly in Lyα (also known as Lyα “blobs”) are likely signposts of ongoing massive galaxy formation. The relative rarity of these sources and their discovery in wellstudied galaxy overdensities suggest that they may be associated with regions of high galaxy density. One of the largest Lyα nebulae, discovered at a redshift of z ≈ 2.7 via its strong mid-infrared ...

Evidence of Increased UV Fe ii Emission in Quasars in Candidate Overdense Regions

We present evidence for a skewed distribution of UV Fe ii emission in quasars within candidate overdense regions spanning spatial scales of ∼ 50 Mpc at 1.11 < z < 1.67, compared to quasars in field environments at comparable redshifts. The overdense regions have an excess of high equivalent width sources (W2400 > 42 Å), and a dearth of low equivalent width sources. There are various possible ex...

The Most Distant Structure of Galaxies Known: a Protocluster at Z = 4.1

Imaging and spectroscopy with the Very Large Telescope have revealed 20 Lyα emitters within a projected distance of 1.3 Mpc and 600 km s −1 of the luminous radio galaxy TN J1338–1942 at z = 4.1. Compared to the field density of Lyα emitters, this implies an overdensity on the order of 15. The structure has a projected size of at least 2.7 Mpc × 1.8 Mpc and a velocity dispersion of 325 km s −1 ,...

Constraining Reionization with the Evolution of the Luminosity Function of Lyman Α Emitting Galaxies

At redshifts beyond z ∼> 6, as the mean fraction of neutral hydrogen 〈xHI〉 in the intergalactic medium (IGM) increases, the line flux of Lyα emitters can be significantly suppressed, which can result in a decrease in the observed number of emitters at a given Lyα flux. However, cosmological HII regions surrounding the Lyα emitting galaxies alleviate these effects. We use simple models of the Ly...

Spitzer Infrared Properties of Lyman α Emitters

We present results on the infrared properties of Lyman α emitters. At z=0.3 we demonstrate that our sample of 50 GALEX-identified emitters possess the same extinction properties as similarly ultraviolet-bright galaxies at the same redshift. The AGN fraction for these z=0.3 sources is low, 10-20%, and they show no correlation between Lyα flux and total infrared luminosity. At z=2.4-3.1 we discus...
